Vietnam: Regional Learning Centers for Protected Area Management

(c) 2003 ICEM

Vietnam is a global biodiversity hotspot. For decades, German development cooperation has supported the country in the conservation and sustainable use of its natural resources.

Transdisciplinary scientists from the University of Greifswald are now cooperating with the University of Agriculture and Forestry in Hue and the University of Education in Hanoi. The objective is to establish two Regional Learning Centres for Protected Area Management with the aim to promote education and training for multipliers, and contribute to scientific exchange and networking. Several Vietnamese biosphere reserves and national parks have been identified as on-the-ground learning sites.

Between 2010 and 2013, the international team will conduct four workshops on protected area management at the Vietnamese institutions, covering issues as diverse as planning, monitoring, GIS, tourism, economic and social impacts, and conflict resolution. Until the end of the project, it will have trained 180 multipliers and supported research activities of 12 PhD students.

The University Cooperation is generously supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
